It was a big night for teen superstars like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift at this year’s Teen Choice Awards.
Sunday night, Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am kicked off Fox’s annual pop culture celebration of the year’s teen-voted favorites in movies, music, TV, celebrities, and red carpet hotties.
This year’s awards ceremony was hosted by The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco who brought a lot of laughs in her up close and personal interactions with teens in the crowd.
Ashton Kutcher stole the spotlight by winning the first surfboard of the night for Choice Movie Actor in a Romantic Comedy, for his role in “No Strings Attached.” He cautioned teenagers to avoid credit card debt, saying, “Dont ever charge anything on a credit card unless you know you already have the money in the bank.” He made the comment, undoubtedly making due reference to this month’s highlighted financial crisis, before leading the audience in a fun sing-a-long to Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream.”
As far as movies were concerned, wizards and vampires ruled in the teen votes. It’s unsurprising since the Harry Potter franchise ended its ten year span on the silver screen this summer and Twilight will be following suit later this fall.
Selena Gomez won five surfboards, including choice TV Actress in a Comedy for her role in “Wizards of Waverly Place,” Choice Music Group, Choice Music Single, and Choice Music Love Song for her hits with band Selena Gomez and The Scene, as well as Choice Female Hottie.
But Taylor Swift was given teen top-honors, taking home the coveted Ultimate Choice Award. She was stunning on the red carpet in a Marilyn Monroe-inspired white halter gown by Rafael Cennamo and Neil Lane jewels, which seemed fitting when she was named Choice Red Carpet Fashion Icon Female.
“Live your life like you’re 80 looking back on your teenage years,” she said, remarking on the best advice she got as a teenager. She was also named Choice Female Artist and Female Country Artist for Choice Country Song, “Mean” and Choice Break-up Song, “Back to December.”
The evening wrapped up with a tribute to the “Harry Potter” movie series as well as many thanks to the fans from its cast members. Choice Movie Villain Tom Felton thanked fans “for making the journey with us.” Meanwhile Choice Summer Movie Star winner Daniel Radcliffe (aka Harry Potter) accepted his surfboard via satellite from New York where he is starring in the Broadway musical, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” and gave his thanks to Harry Potter fans everywhere.
