Gaylor Fans Are Back & They Think “Question…?” Is About Karlie Kloss

Swifties already have a long list of theories about some of the tracks from Taylor Swift’s Midnights, but “Question…?” is quite literally raising questions of its own about “Gaylor.” Yes, you guessed it: Some think that the track is about Swift’s alleged past secret relationship with her former best friend, Karlie Kloss. Let’s take a closer look at all the signs that fans think points to Swift’s “Question…?” being about Kloss.

Fans have long questioned whether Swift and Kloss’ friendship went deeper than just being close friends and “twins,” as they used to say. The two became close back in 2012 and had a long-running friendship until rumors of their distance began circulating in 2018. After Kloss was photographed hanging out with Scooter Braun, who almost everyone knows Swift does not get along with, fans were sure this was the end of their friendship.

So, where do the theories of “Gaylor” come into play? Throughout the duration of their friendship, Swifties have been reading into subtle hints that Swift has dropped in the media and in her music. Some of the strongest suggestions that point to a past relationship between the two rear their heads in Swift’s “Question…?” from Midnights. Let’s dissect all the camouflaged (and obvious) implications that have led fans thinking that Swift might be talking about Kloss in the song.

The opening lyric references “Out of the Woods,” which people think is about Kloss.

There have been many theories that Swift’s “Out of the Woods” from her 1989 album is about her celebrity ex Harry Styles, but some Swifties think the song is actually about Kloss. In the first verse, Swift speaks about how “the rest of the world was in black and white,” which some think hints to the preconceived straight roles in our society, “but we were in bleeding color,” to which may reference the rainbow, aka gay pride.

In the opening lyric of “Question…?” Swift then goes on to sing, “I remember thinking,” which is a lyric also prevalent in the first verse of “Out of the Woods.” Some fans think that Swift may have been hinting at coming out with Kloss even further in that song when she sings, “Are we out of the woods yet?” and “Are we in the clear yet?” in the chorus, insinuating Swift is asking if it’s alright to reveal their relationship.

Kissgate makes a reappearance in the song’s chorus.

At a 2014 concert, rumors began buzzing when a grainy image of what fans thought was Swift and Kloss making out went viral. The media quickly debunked this theory, since the photo was just too unclear to really tell what was going on, also highlighting that Kloss had a boyfriend at the time.

However, in the chorus of “Question…?” Swift references some sort of public kiss, singing, “Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room,” possibly talking about the concert they were both at. She goes on, “And every single one of your friend’s was makin’ fun of you, but 15 seconds later, they were clappin’ too?” Phew — Swift has us all wondering about this one.

Others tie the mention of a “crowded room” to “Dress” on Reputation, that many believe is about Joe Alwyn, so we’re not sure exactly if these lyrics do correlate back to Kloss.

fans think the chorus throws in even more hints at Kloss.

The chorus of “Question…?” is full of potential references to Kloss. Fans think that the lyric “Did you leave her house in the middle of the night?” is an innuendo to the fact that Kloss and Swift used to stay at each other’s homes a lot, with paparazzi photos to prove it. Swift adds, “Did you wish you put up a fight, oh, when she said it was too much?” She could be hinting at the fact that she didn’t want to push the subject of coming out with Kloss as it would be “too much” for the both of them.

Swift slams gender roles in the track’s second verse.

Many think that Swift was criticizing American society’s politics and gender roles and hinting at the fact that conservative beliefs point to the notion that women are not supposed to be with other women. Swift heightens this when singing, “And you’re not sure and I don’t know, got swept away in the gray,” pointing to the rumor that both Kloss and Swift potentially weren’t sure of how they wanted to label themselves.

The mention of the color gray seemingly pulls even more inspiration from the mention of black and white roles in “Out of the Woods,” and how maybe Swift and Kloss weren’t trying to label themselves as something concrete, in this case as coming out with a sexuality other than straight.

Swift references their shared time in NYC again.

It’s no secret that Swift and Kloss hung out a lot in NYC in the mid-2010s. Swift’s mention of the “big city, wrong choices,” has fans thinking that “Question…?” could be about Kloss for the mere mention of a big city.

Swift makes use of “her” pronouns throughout the song.

It’s unclear if Swift was talking about herself in third person perspective throughout parts of “Question…?” but some think that the use of “her” pronouns points to the track being all about Kloss

Will we ever have this question answered directly from Swift? Probably not. Take these theories with a grain of salt (nothing about Taylor and Karlie being romantically involved has ever been confirmed), but I’ll keep streaming “Question…?” regardless of who it’s about.
