The Rundown on 3 of the Hottest Trends in Fall Fashion

If you’re finding it difficult to get dressed lately you’re not alone. Dressing for fall is always a challenge and struggling to find a happy medium between the weather and your wardrobe can be exhausting. Lucky for you, this article is here to help you navigate the treacherous territory of the climate and your closet. Check out these chic and easy style staples that will help anyone master the art of dressing for the in between:

  • The major trend in patterns this season is Polka Dots. This seemingly vintage print made a major comeback on the runways when designers debuted their collections for fall. At least eight major design houses, including Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, and Lanvin, made polka dots a central feature of their collections. Since being spotted (ha!) on runways last spring this trend has trickled down to more attainable retailers and can now be found at a myriad of stores. Zara, Topshop, and Forever 21 all have a wide variety of polka dotted dresses, skirts, and tops for those looking to tryout this trend. If you’re interested in a less traditional way to rock the spots, take a page from the Marc Jacobs show and try a pair of polka dotted stockings, tights, or socks, which can be found at stores like H&M and Bloomingdales.

  • It’s officially jacket season, and while many chilly Columbians opt for the ever-practical sweatshirt, other well-dressed coeds prefer a more timeless cold weather style: the Trench Coat.Trenches can vary greatlyin style, color, and shape; we see coats in traditional khaki but also invibrant red and yellow, a modern, playful touch. Whatever the style, the trench is a chic wardrobe staple of any uptown Ivy-leaguer. This eclectic mix of trench varieties actually mirrors the wide-ranging history of the coat itself, which over the course of 70 years has transformed from a practical military garment to an alternative rock signifier. In recent seasons Burberry has found a way to marry the coat’s modern punk leanings with its historical silhouette, showing classical trenches with studded sleeves and paneling. Check out their entire website devoted to the Art of the Trench for styling tips and trends. (The music on the site is amazing, btw.)

  • If the sudden chill and grey skies have got you down maybe it’s time to add a little glamour to your everyday wardrobe. Fur pieces are making a massive comeback both on and off the runway this season. Why? Because fur is stylish and warm, practical yet elevating, which makes it the perfect piece to pull from your closet on the dreariest of days. While real fur may be out of your comfort zone, either morally or financially, faux-fur offers an affordable, conscience-abiding alternative. Faux-fur vests, scarves, and even coats of a decent to high quality can be found at a wide variety of retailers from Forever 21 to Zara to Urban Outfitters.

So go ahead and give one (or all!) of these stylish looks a try. Fall is waiting for you!
