RECAP: Washington Navy Yard Shooting

A shooting rampage took place at 8:20am EST when gunfire sounded from Washington Navy Yard’s Building 197.

At least 12 civilian casualties have been reported so far and one gunman was pronounced dead at the scene, raising the total number of confirmed deaths to 13. Police are still scouring the area for one more suspect after clearing a second man of any wrongdoing.

The area around Navy Yard was squared off this morning after a gunman located on Building 197’s fourth floor fired down into a cafeteria full of workers. Another gunman was reportedly stalking a hall on the third floor, according to witnesses who had fled the scene.

The dead gunman was later identified as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, a military contractor from Fort Worth.

Several victims still remain in hospitals in the D.C. area, including two or three policemen who sustained gunshot wounds. A few wounded civilians are currently undergoing surgery, including a woman who was shot in the shoulder. All are expected to recover fully.

Investigations are still underway to determine the motive behind the shooting and how at least one gunman was able to access the building.
