‘Princess Diaries 3’ Is Confirmed, But 1 Actress Probably Won’t Return

Updated Published

The word is out — The Princess Diaries 3 is officially happening! Yes, you read that right: We’re finally going to see a third Princess Diaries after years of fan theories and speculation. The original movie debuted in 2001, with its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, coming out in 2004. It’s been a whopping 20 years since we’ve gotten new content surrounding the classic film, so it’s safe to say that fans are ecstatic about the third movie.

The original movie follows the plot of Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) finding out that she is the princess of Genovia. She goes through the journey of learning how to be a princess with the help of her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews). The movie is based on Meg Cabot’s series of novels by the same name. Without further ado, here’s what we know so far about The Princess Diaries 3.

Anne HathawAy confirmed she’s reprising her role as mia.

On Oct. 4, filmmaker Adele Lim, who wrote the scripts for Disney’s 2021 animated film Raya and the Last Dragon and Crazy Rich Asians, confirmed that she’ll be directing The Princess Diaries 3, which will mark her directorial debut.

“As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” she said in a statement to Deadline. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Later that day, Anne Hathaway revealed on social media that she’ll be reprising her role as Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia for the third installment.

PRINCESS DIARIES 3 would be a continuation of the original, not a reboot.

Yes, it’s true: the third movie would be a continuation following the original film’s sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. With the recent surge in classic movie and television reboots, I think everyone is excited that The Princess Diaries 3 will instead continue the classic story set in Genovia.

Aadrita Mukerji is writing the film’s script.

Screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji is set to write the script for the Disney series’ third installment. Mukerji’s past projects include Supergirl, Scorpion, and Quantum Leap.

Julie Andrews is less likely to be a part of the film.

Though Hathaway is confirmed to return for the third movie, it’s unclear if Julia Andrews will. When speaking with ET in June 2022, Andrews actually stated that she would probably not participate in Princess Diaries 3 if it were to come to fruition. “I don’t know, I think I’m the one — she’s probably still okay for it, but I might just be a little too old granny for it, I don’t know,” she said, “It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful. But if not, there will be other things.”

There is currently no release date set.

Alas, there’s very little information surrounding The Princess Diaries 3 except for the fact that it is definitely happening and that it’s currently in development.

Fans have speculated that Mia and Nicholas will be married in the new movie.

Following the end of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, we know that Mia was crowned Queen of Genovia, and had fallen in love with Nicholas (Chris Pine). At the end of the second movie, the couple was seemingly going to be together, something that fans are looking forward to (hopefully) watching with a marriage during The Princess Diaries 3. Pine has, like Hathaway, stated that he would return to the film if it was shot in Los Angeles.

When speaking with Extra in March 2022, Pine was informed there was a Princess Diaries 3 script in the works, to which he replied, “I mean, my God, if you’ve read it… I haven’t, have you?” He continued, raving that he would join, “If it’s in Los Angeles, I’ll be there… if it’s in L.A. It’s my hometown. I have a lot of pride.”
