The Academy has announced their first slate of presenters for the 2018 Oscars, and it looks like this year’s award show is going to be unlike any other. The list features an inclusive selection of women and artists of various races and sexualities, Refinery29 reports, proving that Hollywood is responding to societal change.
The Oscars is celebrating its 90th year with a historic group of presenters. On the list is Daniela Vega, star of A Fantastic Woman, and the first openly transgender actress to bless the stage with a presentation. Other presenters include actors and actresses from primarily black films, like Oscar winner Mahershala Ali of Moonlight, breakout comedian Tiffany Haddish of Girl’s Trip, and new face Chadwick Boseman of Black Panther.
“Whether returning to the Oscars stage, or gracing it for the first time, each of these artists bring their own distinguishing and energetic appeal,” said Producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd during the announcement. “Their contributions will make for an unforgettable evening.”
The list also features a bevy of celebrity women, including activists Emma Stone, Laura Dern, Jennifer Garner and Viola Davis. All actresses have spoken out in support of the #MeToo Movement, encouraging the Time’s Up initiative and promoting female empowerment throughout the entertainment industry. These movements, in addition to the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, definitely played a part in the creation of such an inclusive list. The world is speaking up about inequality and lack of representation in Hollywood, and, thankfully, the Academy seems to be listening.
The remainder of presenters are Kumail Nanjiani, Greta Gerwig and Tom Holland. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will air Sunday, March 4th, on ABC.
