Parents Of Students Killed At Parkland Are Running For The School Board & They’re Setting A Powerful Example

Two parents whose daughters were killed during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in February 2017, announced this morning that they will be running for the Broward County School Board in districts four and eight.

ABC News reports that Lori Alhadeff, mother of Alyssa Alhadeff, who was killed in the Parkland shooting on February 14, says “discipline programs in the district have ‘gone from the complete extremes, from over-disciplining kids to not disciplining kids, which we have now.’ She said discipline policies must be ‘revamped’ and to ‘meet somewhere in the middle.’”

She continued to say “There is no better way to ensure that the change this school system desperately needs is achieved than to have a seat at the table.”

Father Ryan Petty whose daughter, Alaina Petty, was also killed that day, told reporters “Since that day [of the Parkland shooting] like many of the families, we’ve [Petty and Alhadeff] dedicated ourselves to change a system that would allow somebody like Nicholas Cruz to fall through the cracks.”

He adds that he’s running for school board “so I can represent parents all over the district who deserve to have their children come home to them every afternoon after school.”
