Despite the uproar sounded by church groups and the recent success of anti-contraception minded GOP candidates like Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney, the Obama administration is standing by their mandate to make birth control more accesable to American women.Â
Last week, Obama announced that part of the insurance company contraception coverage overhaul will require religiously-affiliated companies to cover birth control.Â
The response was instantanious, with church leaders claiming that their religious freedom was being tampered with by the government. Among the outraged is Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, who said that forcing “American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally unconscionable.”
David Axelrod, one of Obama’s senior campaign advisors said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that “”This is an important issue. It’s important for millions of women across this country. We want to resolve it in an appropriate way, and we’re going to do that.”Â
