National Popcorn Day!

Mmmmm popcorn! To me, there is nothing that compares to popcorn. Movie theatre butter, dark chocolate drizzle, kettle corn — so many great varieties! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Popcorn is food staple of college life — it’s so easy to pick up a box of microwaveable popcorn or a bag of popcorn (Popcorn Indiana is my absolute favorite bagged kind — amazingly delicious!) and share with the girls on your floor as you catch up on the latest episode of Gossip Girl or The Bachelor.

Wednesday, January 19, is National Popcorn Day and I think it’s absolutely necessary to celebrate, so I came up with a list of ways to ring in this tasty holiday...

  • In New York City? Here are a list of places you can get a free sample of Popcorn Indiana brand popcorn:
    • 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.: The Today Show Plaza (48th Street between 5th/6th Ave), The Early Show (59th Street and 5th Ave)
    • 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.: News Media Outreach (Time Life Building, WSJ, Fox News), 6th Avenue between 45th Street and 50th Street
    • 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Times Square (7th Ave/Broadway between 42nd Street and 44th Street & Fr Duffy Square)
    • 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.: Penn Station (7 Ave between 31st and 33rd Street), Grand Central Station (42nd Street between Lexington Ave and Vanderbilt Ave)
    • To New Yorkers who can’t leave class or their internship? Tweet @Popcorn_Indiana for a chance to get popcorn delivered! Or leave a post on their Facebook wall (facebook.com/popcornindiana)!
  • Try making homemade popcorn! Pour a thin layer of oil in a 5 qt. or larger pot with kernels covering the bottom of the pot (but not so many that they all can’t fully touch the bottom of the pot). Heat on medium heat and listen carefully while the popcorn pops. Once 10 seconds go by without any popcorn popping (after continuous popping), turn off the heat. Let the popcorn sit for a few minutes and then transfer into a large bowl, season with salt or salt and melted butter, and enjoy!

  • Go see a movie and splurge for the popcorn! Are you in the mood to see a potential Oscar winning flick? Check out Black Swan or The King’s Speech. In the mood for some laughs? The Dilemma is a perfect choice! Just don't forget the popcorn!
  • Mix up your usual microwave popcorn by adding in M&Ms, drizzling melted caramel or chocolate over it, or making it cheesy by adding melted Parmesan cheese and cayenne pepper.
  • Or try a different variation of microwaved or bagged popcorn! One very creative variation that I love — Popcorn Indiana’s Cinnamon Sugar! So tasty! On Thursday you can go back to your usual favorite (mmm movie theatre popcorn!)
