The Morning Scroll: Meghan Markle Makes First Public Appearance Since Baby Archie’s Arrival & Disney World Has a New Boozy Summer Treat

Morning! While you were sleeping (or staying up to binge-watch Friends for the tenth time, or pulling an all-nighter in the library), a few things went down that you’ll probably want to know about. So grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and get scrolling.

What in the World

Meghan Markle took a break from maternity leave to attend Queen Elizabeth’s Trooping the Colour birthday celebration on Saturday.

It was the Duchess of Sussex’s first public outing since the birth of her and Prince Harry’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in early May.

Thousands of spectators gathered in the central streets of London to celebrate the queen’s birthday and to watch the parade. The queen’s real birthday is in April, but it is officially observed in June so that it can coincide with the parade and so members of the public can attend. Queen Elizabeth was joined by members of the royal family, including Prince Charles, the next in line to the throne, and Prince William, ABC News reports. Both Prince Charles and Prince William wore full military regalia and took part in the military procession.

Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry came by carriage, and Queen Elizabeth rode in the Scottish State Coach.

Today The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined The Queen and members of The Royal Family at the annual Trooping the Colour, to celebrate Her Majesty’s official birthday. Trooping the Colour orginated from traditional preparations for battle and has commemorated the birthday of the sovereign for more than 250 years. In the 18th century, guards from the royal palaces regularly assembled to “troop” colours or flags down the rank, so they could be seen and recognised by the soldiers. In 1748, it was announced this parade would also mark the Sovereign’s official birthday. Trooping the Colour is performed by regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies for The Queen’s birthday parade, allowing them to pay a personal tribute to Her Majesty. Today over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians came together on Horse Guards Parade in London in a great display of military precision, horsemanship and fanfare. The parade concludes with a 41-gun salute fired by The King’s Troop, following which The Queen leads members of The Royal Family back to the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the Royal Air Force flypast display. New mom Meghan looked absolutely radiant during her appearance during the event, and, in a nod to her wedding, wore a navy ensemble designed by Clare Waight-Keller, who, as you may recall, designed Meghan’s stunning off-the-shoulder wedding dress, Cosmopolitan reports.

Fan account Meghan’s Mirror also noticed that the duchess was also wearing a new ring along with her engagement and wedding rings, with some speculating that it might be a present from Harry.

Duchess Meghan wasn’t the only stealing the show at the event Saturday. It was the first Trooping for Prince Louis, who is just one-year-old and the third child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, ABC News reports. Prince Louis was a natural at working the crowd.

Baby Archie, however, stayed home because he was too young to participate this year.

News You Can Eat

Then This Happened

American Airlines announced on Sunday that it is extending cancellations of all Boeing 737 Max flights through September 3, affecting hundreds of summer travelers per day through Labor Day.

The airline said it removed the grounded 737 Max from its flight schedule by about three weeks later than previously announced, in the wake of two fatal Boeing crashes that left 346 people dead.

The country’s largest airline said it was awaiting recertification of the planes by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Last week, the FAA said a joint investigation with Boeing found that more than 300 planes may have been manufactured with faulty parts by a Boeing supplier. The parts used on 737 Max and 737 NG planes “may be susceptible to premature failure or cracks,” the FAA said.

The airline said it would try to move passengers affected by the latest announcement to other flights, but that ultimately 115 flights per day were likely to be canceled because of the extensions, ABC News reports.

Passengers who were not scheduled on 737 Max flights may also face cancellations in order to use those plan on Max routes that require coverage, HuffPost reports.

“A flight that was not scheduled as a MAX flight might be canceled to enable our team to cover a MAX route with a different aircraft,” the airline said in a statement on Sunday. “Our goal is to minimize the impact to the smallest number of customers.”

According to the airline’s statement, passengers whose flights have been canceled may request a full refund if they do not want to be rebooked.

American Airlines also revealed that it will need 45 days of training once Boeing rolls out a number of software fixes to remedy the malfunctions with the 737 Max passenger planes, ABC News reports.

United and Southwest Airlines have also removed the Boeing 737 Max from their schedules through most of the busy summer travel season.
