HerCampus Auburn has posted about the shootings of two former university athletes, who were–according to The Los Angeles Times–among 6 victims in a violent altercation which took place last night at a party near the Alabama campus.Â
Former Auburn football players Ladarius Phillips and Ed Christian succumbed to their injuries, along with local resident Demario Pitts. All three were 20 years old.
Current player Eric Mack was among the three men injured. He is hospitalized and expected to recover.Â
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted party-goer Turquorius Vines as to the cause of the incident: “It was about a female … It started from a female. We were trying to get away from the trouble and it ended up right in our face.”
Montgomery, Ala., resident DesMonte Leonard, 22–who fled the scene of the crime– is being charged with the killings, and a manhunt is underway.Â
Although there was a delay in reporting by the mainstream media after the incident–pending official confirmation of the deaths–many in the Auburn community found out about the casualties via Twitter.Â
