Miley Cyrus Speaks Out About Barcelona Groping Incident & Her Message on Consent is Powerful

Miley Cyrus was aggressively groped by a fan while walking with her husband, Liam Hemsworth, in Barcelona, Spain over the weekend. An upsetting video of the whole incident surfaced, and Cyrus took to her Instagram Stories to respond, delivering a powerful message on consent.

The She is Coming artist was leaving a Barcelona hotel with husband Hemsworth when she was groped by a stanger who pulled her by her hair and grabbed her to kiss her, Cosmopolitan reports. Video footage posted on social media showed the couple making their way from their hotel to their car, wading their way through a large crowd. As the couple walked through the flock of people, one man reached out and grabbed Cyrus’ hair before pulling her in to kiss her.

In the video, Cyrus is seen turning away from the individual as her security team stepped in to help. Hemsworth put his arm around her and helped safely escort her into the vehicle.

Following the terrifying incident, a source told E! News that while the pop singer “always respects her fans’ enthusiasm,” she was “certainly unsettled by this,” adding that she is “doing fine now.”

Cyrus took to her Instagram Stories Tuesday to respond to the unsettling incident and gave an important lesson on consent, adding “#DontF–kWithMyFreedom”.

“She can be wearing what she wants. She can be a virgin. She can be sleeping with 5 different people,” Cyrus wrote, embedding the video of the incident. “She can be with her husband. She can be with her girlfriend. She can be naked. She CAN’T be grabbed without her consent.”

The 26-year-old singer added the hastag #DontFuckWithMyFreedom, which happens to be one of the lyrics from her song Mother’s Daughter.

The pop singer also took to Twitter to post more critical comments, writing, “Don’t f–k with my freedom. #stillnotaskingforit.”

Cyrus dropped her new six-track EP, She Is Coming, on Friday, May 31.

But Miley is right — it’s never OK, under any conditions, to touch someone without their consent. Thank you, Miley, for reminding us all of this important lesson.
