In The ‘Me Asking’ TikTok Trend, You Don’t Always Get What You Ask For

Have you ever asked the universe for something only to have it respond with the complete opposite? In the Me Asking TikTok trend, creators are turning life’s disappointments into amusing videos highlighting their hilarious and humbling moments, and the results are killing me. Suddenly, I’m having flashbacks to various online shopping faux pas (pro tip: everything looks different in person) or how my sister asked for a side of onion rings the other night at Cookout (IYKYK) but received a corndog instead. Not. The. Same.

#MeAsking utilizes an original sound from creator @heyitssarahw who politely asks for a blue raspberry slushie at the McDonald’s drive-through, only to hear “a sausage McMuffin?” in return. After viewing the original video, TikTokers requested that she make the blue raspberry slushie bit into its own sound, and now, users are channeling their letdowns into fun videos using the soundbite as inspiration. #MeAsking is far too relatable, and it’s super easy to try.

First, recall a time when you wished for something — your favorite slushie, a manageable class schedule, a new Harry Styles album, or all of the above — only to receive the complete opposite. Then, film yourself asking for the blue raspberry slushie in time with this soundbite, and overlay it with a caption indicating what you really wanted. After a dramatic pause, cut to your reaction of “a sausage McMuffin?” and write what you actually received in return.

TikTokers are having a blast with this one, from creators referencing astrology to celebs like @colleen (AKA Miranda Sings) reminiscing about her childhood dreams. I’m forever tickled by the version from TikToker @miaaasc, who simply wanted to follow in her scientist parents’ footsteps, but was blessed with a different talent instead. I love a good TikTok trend that allows creators to loosen up and laugh at themselves, and the #MeAsking trend does exactly that.

If you catch me silent giggling at my desk in the middle of the day, there’s a 99% chance it’s because of this trend. Between the priceless audio (it gets me every time) to the way TikTokers have cleverly responded with their own mishaps, I’ll remember the trend for a long time. Let’s be real, you don’t always get what you ask for, and #MeAsking is a humbling reminder of that.
