Matt Renick: AEPi President

Name: Matt Renick
Year: 2013
School: GS/JTS
Majors: History and Modern Jewish Studies
Interests: Sports, Politics, and American History

Describe AEPi.
AEPi is first and foremost the Jewish fraternity at Columbia University. We strive to be a cultural and social outlet for the Jewish man at Columbia and strive to be a top philanthropic and community service organization.

As President, what are your obligations and how do you plan to reshape the fraternity?
I manage the fraternity. Officially, I am the fraternity‘s CEO and run everything from brotherhood meetings to any events we throw. I am also the liaison to the administration and our international organization. In terms of reshaping the organization, AEPi has always been first and foremost a Jewish fraternity. Obviously, without a house, we have had to slightly alter the way we do social events but it does not change our reason for existing. On a more practical level, we are doing more events off-campus, working with the campus Hillel community, and trying to spread our influence all over Morningside Heights.

What should we expect from AEPi this semester?
Primarily you should expect a great group of Jewish leaders on campus, that is what we are all about, but you can also expect weekly off-campus parties, visible philanthropic events such as AEPi-a-brother, noteworthy community service efforts, and as always, our championship intramural teams. The AEPi-thons are the undefeated dodge ball champions and we are hungry for more.

How will your rush process work this semester?
This year we have worked with Hillel for our rush. We were present at the Jewish Life Orientation (JELLO) and Hillel Life Fair. This week we will be hosting Friday night hangouts and a Kiddush Saturday morning event. Also, we are using our big philanthropic events to draw in people and we are using traditional methods such as calling kids, dorm storming, and going to different events on campus to meet Jewish guys.

What distinguishes AEPi from other fraternities?
AEPi is the Jewish fraternity. It is our biggest distinction. It is why we were founded and why we exist. We have the highest GPA on campus, always win philanthropy awards, and are home to the nice Jewish guys.
