Every Tuesday I drive to campus about 4:40 p.m., park my car and head to Subway.
I have class from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and I bring my sandwich to class with me to avoid the embarrassing stomach growl when the whole classroom is silent. One time my stomach growled so loudly someone asked if the noise was a lawn mower.
I’m usually not hungry at 5 p.m., but I would be starving at 8 p.m. I know I need to eat dinner before class ends in order to avoid overeating later.
My Subway order never changes. I order one of two sandwiches, depending on my mood. I wouldn’t be surprised if the people who work at Subway know my name by now.
Option one: wheat bread, turkey, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, pickle.
Option two: wheat bread, sweet onion chicken teriyaki, lettuce tomato, onion.
I leave off the cheese, sauce, and I stick to lean meats. And although the Subway cookies are always tempting, I know they pack on a lot of extra calories and fat to my meal. Instead, I always order a side of apples and a diet soda.
I also know the soda isn’t the healthiest thing in the world, and some even argue that diet soda is worse for you than sugary soda. However, I need the caffeine to keep me awake for my last three hours of class. I think everything is OK in moderation and having one diet soda a week won’t kill me.
Subway is always advertised as the healthy fast food. And it definitely can be healthy, but it is also important to pay attention to what you order because there are many hidden calories once you add on the sauces.
How do you stay healthy when you’re on the go?
