Listen Here: College Rap

Do you often shower yourself in bottles of $500 champagne? No? Really? Me neither. Do your guy friends party with strippers on the regular and make it rain dolla dollar bills? Or are they more likely to be with their study group, in the library, watching it rain?

Unfortunately for most of us, our lives don’t play out like the lives of the musicians we listen to. It’s a nice fantasy and certainly fun to dance to — but you can’t relate. But fortunately, the genre of college rap is relatable — and more importantly than that, has some really, really great music.

So take a listen at these three college rappers, who have become among my favorite musicians recently.

Kinetics & One Love

The Cornell graduates, who penned the superhit “Airplanes” performed by B.o.B. and Haley Williams, have released a ton of music since they met in 2006, including songs about graduating and late night hookups — definitely relatable. Check out one of their latest collaborations, with Josh Cocktail and Loggy, “Be Easy.”

Sam Adams

From Trinity College came Sam Adams, who came to my attention with his remix of “I Love College” by Asher Roth, “I Hate College.” And while I love college, I definitely like Sam’s version over Asher’s. Take a listen to one of his original tunes, “Tab’s Open.”

Mike Posner

Despite having hits in 2010, Mike was still making his way through school, graduating from Duke that year. And while I can almost guarantee you’ve heard his song, “Cooler Than Me” you may not have heard his unexpected and amazing cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”

What do you think of these songs and artists? Let me know by posting a comment below!
