Iām tired of talking about Lee. Iām tired of seeing a guy whoās made a multitude of racist, sexist and homophobic comments take up precious Bachelorette screen-time.
During Monday nightās Men Tell All special, Lee did apologize. He denounced his hateful tweets; he also said he had a lot to learn and that he doesnāt like racism. *insert pondering face emoji* Itās really not up to me to decide whether Lee actually meant what he said. Iād like to give Lee the benefit of the doubt and say that he can change if he wants to. There are plenty of people who donāt believe he was sincereāwho think he just said those things for the cameras. Maybe so. But like I said, Iām tired of talking about Lee. Letās shift the focus to the people who stepped up to educate him during The Men Tell All.
After Kenny hashed out his beef with Lee, which he said didnāt feel like a racial issue at the time, Josiah joined Lee in the hot seat to drop some knowledge on him. Referring to a tweet in which Lee compared the KKK to the NAACP, Josiah said, āPeople came before me so that I could go to the same school like you, so I could drink from the fountain like you, and if youāre comparing them to the KKKāpeople who hung my ancestorsāwhy are you trying to date a woman who looks like me?ā Thank you, Josiah!
Anthony, a man of few words during Rachelās season, had probably the most poignant message for Lee. Sensing that Lee didnāt consider himself a racist, even after Chris Harrison read the receipts, Anthony explained, āI think youāre just saying, āIāve been a bad person,ā but youāre not acknowledging the kind of invisible racism in your mind. You may not be doing it intentionally, but I think itās still motivating your actions. The racism that is ingrained in your behavior to the point of invisibility is still pushing you to behave in a certain way towards Kenny, towards Eric, towards meāin a way that you donāt even recognize.ā Yes, Anthony. YES.
And then thereās Rachel. How lucky are we to have Rachel as our Bachelorette? I mean⦠You just know sheās been biting her tongue waiting to lay a sassy one-liner on Lee ever since his old tweets surfaced. And she sure didnāt disappoint. āPlease know that you can exit stage left and meet me backstage and Iād be more than happy to give you a black history lesson, a lesson on womenās rights,ā she told him. I, for one, wouldāve loved to see that.
Thereās really no way for us to know at this point whether this Men Tell All conversation was enough to change Leeās views or the way he behaves. Even if it didnāt educate him, though, maybe it educated someone elseāsomeone watching at home or in the studio audience who didnāt realize how their words affect the people theyāre stereotyping and disparaging. Thank you to the peopleĀ who did the hard work of explaining these issuesāI think it’s just what Bachelor Nation needed to hear.
