At Least 30 Killed in Brussels Terrorist Attacks

At least 30 people were killed in terrorist bombings in the airport and subway of Belgium’s capital, Brussels. The New York Times reports that ISIS has taken responsibility for the attacks.

Two bombs went off at  Zaventem Airport, killing at least 10, but a third attack followed at the Maelbeek metro station, killing around 20 people. Over 200 more were wounded.

Not everyone was surprised. “I think, after the Paris attacks, we were assuming something like this would happen,” Richard Medic, who arrived the metro station after the attacks, told CNN. “And it was a matter of time.”

The Times reports that Belgium was at a high risk for several reasons, including poor security services. Last Friday, Salah Abdeslam, the last remaining uncaptured perpetrator of the Paris attacks, was captured in Brussels.

That doesn’t make the attacks any less painful. “We were fearing terrorist attacks, and that has now happened,” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said, according to CNN.

The BBC reports that police have released security footage of three men are thought to be the suspects, pictured above. Since the attacks, all flights and trains into and out of Belgium have been canceled, and security has been tightened throughout Europe.

Tonight, the Eiffel Tower will be lit with the colors of Belgium’s flag: black, red and yellow.
