Here’s How To Do That Viral Wes Anderson Trend On TikTok

A Wes Anderson trend has been taking over TikTok recently, and it’s been SO aesthetically pleasing! Wes Anderson is a filmmaker known for his distinctive cinematic style, which includes symmetrical shots, warm-toned and saturated filters, and stop-motion-like takes. Anderson’s directed major films like The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Royal Tenenbaums, to name a few.

Anderson’s cinematic style has been trending on TikTok, with people taking the style and recreating it into their personal adventures, including dinner dates, taking the train, on trips to foreign countries, and more. This trend started when Ava Williams posted a TikTok of her taking the “first train Along the Shoreline East to Grand Central Terminal.” Her video gained popularity because of Anderson’s recognizable techniques, and then the rest of TikTok decided to hop on his film style to romanticize their videos. The quirkier and more vintage-looking the location, the more Wes Anderson your video will be, as some people say (and by some people, I mean me).

With a good imagination, everything is symmetrical. Let a girl day dream! #wesanderson

Now, how do you do the Wes Anderson trend to begin with? Well, it’s quite simple actually! It only requires five steps to get your TikTok to feel like a Wes Anderson film.

Use the “Obituary” by Alexandre Desplat sound.

I’ve recently discovered Wes Anderson and his films so here’s a quick & fun little video for this trend

♬ Obituary – Alexandre Desplat

This song was used in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch in 2021. Also, make sure to start your video with text on the screen that starts, “You better not act like you’re in a Wes Anderson film…” It really sets the scene.

Stand still in front of your location.

Make sure that you are standing still in front of your destination for about five seconds for your first clip, and ensure that the frame is symmetrical. Symmetry is key for this trend. You should also be filming straight at your subject, and not include any angles. It’s important that you aren’t panning shots or having any of your clips at an angle other than 90 degrees or 180 degrees. Finally, ensure your clips are still, because this will capture the Wes Anderson cinematic technique that is so recognizable.

Include A title frame.

This should be a colored background that matches your video. Include your location and the time you’re there. (Tip: Make sure to include the location only at first, then add the time after a second or two, so the writing isn’t overwhelming).

Record your clips.

Here’s a great template on how long each of your clips should be!

Use Anderson’s recognizable color palette.

To capture the perfect Wes Anderson-style TikTok, you’re going to need to saturate your video and include warm-tone filters.

And that’s it! Happy TikToking!
