Hillary Clinton Could End This Election With More Votes Than You Might Think

Now, a week after Election Day, absentee votes are still being tallied—and many of them are increasing Hillary Clinton’s lead in the popular vote, according to The Atlantic.

The total number of votes shows that voter turnout decreased significantly from the last presidential election. People who voted for President Obama in 2012 didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton last week, and that lost her the election, along with myriad other reasons.

However, some votes haven’t been counted yet. Provisional and absentee ballots will take another few weeks to total, and many of these votes will be for Clinton—they were cast in heavily Democratic states like California and New York. Increased absentee and early voting have made it increasingly difficult for the states to get all of their votes counted as quickly as when most voters went to the polls on election day. In California, there are 4 million votes yet to be counted.

As of Nov. 13, Clinton had received 61.3 million votes, and that total will only increase as more votes are counted. She might win the popular vote by more than 2 percent.

However, it is important to note that no matter what happens with the popular vote, the results of the election will not change. The electoral college is what matters, and Donald Trump won more than 270 electoral votes—so he will be the next president of the United States.
