Netflix released the highly anticipated trailer for Heartstopper Forever on June 17, and it’s everything. As if fans weren’t already freaking out over seeing Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring back on their screens, the fact that a song from Olivia Rodrigo’s new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, plays in the background is sending people over the edge.
The Heartstopper film, set to release on July 17, will be the finale to the three-season Netflix series, which tells the love story of students Charlie and Nick. Based on the trailer, it seems as though they’re sticking pretty closely to the plot of Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper graphic novel series. In the final book, Nick and some other members of their friend group begin touring universities. But, since Charlie is a year younger, he and Nick have to start seriously thinking about the future of their relationship.
In the trailer, viewers get a glimpse into these more serious dynamics, with Nick and Charlie fighting about their relationship, going to prom, and worrying about growing apart. All the while, Rodrigo’s “Stupid Song” is playing, which has fans truly reeling.
“Olivia Rodrigo in soundtrack, I’m crying,” one user commented on the official Heartstopper Instagram account. “I already wasn’t okay and then Olivia started playing,” wrote another. Fans were also losing it in the YouTube comments, noting how well “Stupid Song” fits the Hearstopper universe. “Wow, hearing ‘Stupid Song’ in the background felt so special to me. Olivia and Heartstopper in one is so ICONIC, I can’t wait to watch this movie,” one user commented. Another simply said: “This song fits so perfectly.”
While the inclusion of “Stupid Song” was a pleasant surprise, it’s not totally out of left field. The pop singer’s song “good 4 u” was featured in Season 3 of the show. Plus, Rodrigo and Joe Locke, who plays Charlie, have been close friends for years. The pair have often been spotted together at concerts and parties, and they even celebrated Rodrigo’s 22nd birthday together. Hearing Rodrigo’s music over Locke’s acting just feels right.
The only question left is whether or not audiences will get to hear more songs off you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love in Heartstopper Forever. If there will be, everyone needs to restock their tissues ASAP.
