HC Wake-Up Call: Senate Majority Leader Says Roy Moore Should Exit Race, a Florida Man Claims He’s “Transracial” & New Charges in Penn State Hazing Case

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Says Roy Moore Should Exit Senate Race

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he believes the women accusing Moore and that Moore should withdraw his candidacy, the Huffington Post reports. “I believe the women, yes,” he told reporters in Louisville on Monday. Moore responded to McConnell’s remarks tweeting, “The person who should step aside is @SenateMajLdr Mitch McConnell. He has failed conservatives and must be replaced. #DrainTheSwamp,” he wrote.

Later on Monday, a fifth woman, Beverly Young Nelson, came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Moore, saying he forced her head into his crotch one night in a car when she was only 16 years old. Nelson told reporters in a press conference that Moore told her, “no one will believe you” if she were to tell anyone what happened.

A Man in Florida Says He Was Born White but Feels Filipino

Ja Du was born a while male, but the Florida man says he identifies as Filipino, USA Today reports. He says he considers himself to be “transracial” and grew up enjoying Filipino culture.

“Whenever I’m around the music, around the food, I feel like I’m in my own skin,” he told USA Today. “I’d watch the History Channel, sometimes for hours … nothing else intrigued me more but things about Filipino culture.”

Meanwhile, many are accusing Ja Du of cultural appropriation and insensitivity, and his claims have sparked comparisons to those of Rachel Dolezal, who was born white and portrayed herself as black, even serving as the president of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the NAACP for a period of time.

New Charges Have Been Announced in the Penn State Hazing Death

After the FBI was able to recover a video deleted by one member of Beta Theta Pi at Penn State, where 19-year-old pledge Timothy Piazza was killed as a result of hazing earlier this year, new charges have been brought against members of the fraternity, according to BuzzFeed News. The video reportedly shows Beta Theta Pi brothers encouraging Piazza and other pledges to consume over 18 drinks in less than an hour and a half. As a result of the video, prosecutors have brought involuntary manslaughter charges against 12 new defendants, as well as introducing new charges, including furnishing alcohol to a minor and unlawful acts relative to liquor, for five defendants that were already named in the case.
