HC Wake-Up Call: NFL Player Talks Down to Female Reporter, The San Juan Mayor on Trump’s Towel Toss & Krispy Kreme’s Pumpkin Spice Doughnuts

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

NFL Player Gives Sexist Response to a Female Sports Reporter

It’s no secret that it’s hard to be a woman in sports reporting, and Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue was sorely reminded of this. She talked shop in a question for Panthers quarterback Cam Newton during his weekly press conference, asking him about another player’s game routes. Newton smiled and said, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes like that. It’s funny.”

“I don’t think it’s “funny” to be a female and talk about routes,” Rodrigue later said on Twitter. “I think it’s my job.”

Luckily, if you browse through mentions of Newton’s name on Twitter, many agree with Rodrigue, who revealed that she didn’t receive an apology from Newton. Hang in there, girl, we’re with you on this!

The San Juan Mayor Responds to *That* Trump Paper Towel Stunt

San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz definitely isn’t the biggest fan of President Donald Trump, and after seeing the president toss out paper towel rolls like he was at a sports game during his Puerto Rico visit, she’s still not crazy about him.

“This terrible and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people, it does not embody the spirit of the American nation,” Cruz said in an interview with MSNBC. “That is not the land of the free and the home of the brave, that beacon of democracy that people have learned to look up to across the world.”

Cruz also wrote off Trump’s meeting with Puerto Rico’s local leaders as a PR stunt, saying that, “There was no exchange with anybody, with none of the mayors.”

Get Ready for Krispy Kreme Pumpkin Spice Doughnuts

If your pumpkin spice latte just isn’t enough to get you in the autumnal spirit, Krispy Kreme is coming to the rescue with its pumpkin spice doughnuts. The company brought out the recipe for a limited time last month, but its participating locations will now offer the treats on October’s first three Fridays in honor of fall. On October 26, known as National Pumpkin Day, the doughnuts will be available for the entire day. If you really want to get adventurous, Krispy Kreme even has its own pumpkin spice latte for you to try out.

What to look out for…

Today is Do Something Nice Day, which we definitely need to celebrate this week. Even if it’s just as simple as thanking the dining hall workers or holding the door for someone, look for opportunities to spread goodness today!
