THE HC TEAM WEIGHS IN: Pop Culture Predictions for 2011

  • In 2011, the masses will see that Selena Gomez, not Miley Cyrus, Ashley Tisdale or Hilary Duff, is the real gem in the Disney fortune. The Disney Channel will be try and promote the heck out of Alyson Stoner, but not to the same level of success.
  • President Obama, trying to look more youthful, will become the first Presidential spokesperson for Just for Men.
  • Tom Bradyand Giselle will announce that they’re expecting another baby in the first half of 2011.

  • Gleewill go one of two ways — either skyrocket to control the universe, or completely disappear by May.
  • The world will mourn for the ending of childhood as we know it this summer with the finale of Harry Potter.
  • Jersey Shorewill (hopefully) fizzle once people understand that the stars are not from New Jersey and are barely Italian.
  • James Francowill continue to surprise and amaze us by doing anything and everything at one time.

  • I’m pretty sure Miley Cyrus will enjoy a stint in jail or rehab, Justin Bieber will cut his hair, and some other Disney heartthrob will release a sex tape — cross your fingers for Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens…are they still together?  But in all seriousness, I think it’s going to be a pretty low-drama year. People are tired of watching socialites make bad decisions, so I think (and hope!) that celebs will keep their drug habits private, weddings tasteful, and remember never to leave a limo without full-coverage underwear.

  • The MTV remake of Skins will be the new Gossip Girl

  • Music: Tinie Tempah — This British rapper skills are undeniable, and his hit “Pass Out” is catchy and clever. I think we should keep our eyes out for this one!
  • Movies: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — Although this movie is lacking one major British hottie, Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp still graces us with his presence. Let’s not complain, this film is still sure to get our heart pumping!

  • Armie Hammer(who played the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network) will become Hollywood’s newest megastar. Not only is he over 6ft and gorgeous, but he is surprisingly talented and is set to star as Leonardo DiCaprio‘s lover in an upcoming movie!
  • No Strings Attachedwill be the cutest date movie of 2011. When a movie stars the talented and beautiful Natalie Portman alongside the funny and adorable Ashton Kutcher, it’s bound to be golden.
  • Bloggers will become even more famous in 2011. It’s just the beginning for bloggers like Tavi, who’ve proved that all it takes is a computer and a passion for something in order to create a name for yourself.

  • Up and coming celebrities: Willow Smith, Elle Fanning, Hailee Steinfeld
  • Celebrity comebacks: Britney Spears, Natalie Portman (pregnancy, Oscar buzz, several new movies)
  • TV: Off the Map (new show by Grey’s producers)
  • Movies: Sucker Punch (fantastical warriors are the new vampires)
  • Fashion: ankle boots (especially lace-ups), hats, floral
  • Websites: “Dear Blank Please Blank” and “when parents text” will replace “fmylife” and “texts from last night”

  • I think some things to look out for in 2011 music-wise are definitely Bonnie Dune (Cory Monteith, or “Finn” from Glee, is the drummer) and Ryan Lutz, a nineteen-year old musician with a killer voice and smile to match. As for celebrities, I’m kinda wondering how many teenage girls all over the world are going to dislike Selena Gomez for stealing their main man, Justin Bieber!

  • The kids from Glee are going to be huge. They will be on the radio (with their own singles) and in the movies. We love our Gleeks and Hollywood is going to take full advantage of their talent and fan base. Quinn (Dianna Argon) is already in two movies coming out soon (I am Number Four and The Hunters).
  • The year of Natalie Portman? Black Swan, No Strings Attached and if you go on IMDB she has four other movies in the works for 2011. Plus, the celeb media is already obsessed with her engagement and pregnancy. If you can win some awards she will become America’s Sweetheart for 2011.
  • The new TV show on MTV, Skins, will become big. It was a huge hit in Britain and now it will be in the US. It has a good system. Every two seasons it replaces its whole cast so it is a great place for young actors to get a look. Who doesn’t like getting new eye-candy on TV in an addicting TV series all about teenage angst.

  • Ke$hatries to usurp Lady Gaga‘s title of “Queen of Insightful Pop”… despite a few chart toppers, she ultimately falls short but hey, if she still “wakes up every morning feeling like P Diddy” she doesn’t have much to be upset about.
  • Potential Brangelina split. Why? Because. Things can’t really be as good as they seem… right?
  • Modern Family continues to be awesome — big surprise there.

–       Alison Geraghty, Campus Correspondent, UPenn

  • Girl power still reigns, with artists like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and Taylor Swift topping the charts (and I’ll be looking for a song about Jake Gyllenhall)!

–       Molly Hess, Campus Correspondent, Franklin & Marshall College

  • I think a lot is going to happen for Snooki in 2011. She already came out with a book, so I think next she will get her own reality show — a spin-off of Jersey Shore, maybe even a dating show, called Smush for Snooki, or something like that. I also think she will start dating someone in Hollywood.
  • I think Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are going to get engaged.
