What We Know About MGK’s New Movie, ‘Good Mourning’

On Aug. 21, 2021, Machine Gun Kelly, also known as Colson Baker, broke the Internet (yet again) by announcing his upcoming movie Good Mourning. A stoner romantic comedy, Good Mourning is the rockstar’s latest directorial project in collaboration with singer Mod Sun.

This isn’t Machine Gun Kelly’s first stab at directing — last year, he also worked with Mod Sun in directing Downfalls High, a short film posted on YouTube meant to accompany his angsty pop-punk album Tickets to My Downfall. Beyond music, Machine Gun Kelly is exploring both acting and directing, and his new Good Mourning film is no exception in his creative journey.

Here is everything we know about Machine Gun Kelly’s and Mod Sun’s movie Good Mourning so far, including the trailer, cast, release date, and more.

The Good Mourning Trailer Is A Fever Dream

The Good Mourning trailer was released on April 20 (get it?) on YouTube, with the caption providing a brief synopsis of the film.

The trailer begins with a montage of main character London Clash (Machine Gun Kelly) impersonating numerous fictional characters. London then introduces himself, explaining that he’s an actor and has a girlfriend named Apple. Following a sappy montage of the two lovebirds sitting on top of their car and admiring the Los Angeles skyline, the trailer abruptly cuts to chaotic scenes of London and his friends smoking and getting into all sorts of random mayhem. And, for some reason, there’s Megan Fox in a pink wig.

What is Good Mourning about?

According to the caption under the trailer on YouTube, Good Mourning follows actor London Clash waking up to a cold break-up text (which is easily the worst way to get broken up with) from the love of his life, Apple… ouch. That same day, London has a meeting that could change his entire career and turn him into a movie star — but will it all go up in flames? The rest of the caption reads, “Compounded by chaotic roommates, and wildly unpredictable twists and turns, London’s day keeps going downhill until ultimately, he is forced to choose between pursuing his one true love and landing a life-changing, starring role in a major motion picture.” So basically, the film is a reimagined stoner version of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

The release date is soon… like, really soon

The film is set to release both in theaters and on-demand on May 20.

The Cast Is Stacked, with A-listers like Pete Davidson and Megan Fox

Perhaps what is most interesting about Good Mourning is the cast, which is just stacked with big-name celebrities within Machine Gun Kelly’s inner circle of friends. The movie stars Machine Gun Kelly (obviously) as London and Becky G as Apple, with Mod Sun playing one of London’s friends. There are also several appearances by Machine Gun Kelly’s fiancée and “bloody valentine” Fox and BFF Pete Davidson (but the real question is, will Kim Kardashian make a special appearance?).

Whitney Cummings (who plays London’s agent), GaTa, Zach Villa, Jenna Boyd, and Boo Johnson will also make appearances in the film.

What do fans think about good mourning?

So far, fans seem divided on whether the movie looks good or like the worst movie they’ve ever seen (there appears to be no in-between). Under Machine Gun Kelly’s Instagram post debuting the trailer, one fan commented, “I can’t wait for this 🔥🔥” while another said, “This looks so good omg.” On the other end of the spectrum, some users weren’t too impressed by the Good Mourning trailer, with one user writing, “This looks dumb as hell.” Another user even wrote, “why is this movie happening.”

Thankfully, fans don’t have long to decide for themselves whether Good Mourning is a flop or the greatest stoner film of all time. Will Good Mourning be the next Pineapple Express? Who knows — but with a cast this stacked, the film will likely garner a cult following.
