Food Horror Video Reveals Pretty Little Liars’ Antagonistic Relationship with Food

With the Season 4 premiere of ABC Family’s hit show Pretty Little Liars last night, fans can anticipate another season of anonymous texts, exposed secrets, and lots of black hoodies. All along we thought that Hanna, Spencer, Emily, and Aria’s biggest problem was “A.” But, as it turns out, food may pose a greater threat.

In a video called “Food Horror,” posted on the blog Future Shipwreck, devoted PLL fan Graham Kolbeins splices together every scene from the first three season of the popular teen thriller that depicts food in a negative light. Each scene shows the TV show characters rejecting food with everything from unease to revulsion to downright horror.

Though entertaining, the juxtaposition of each food-based scene also effectively demonstrates the habitual stigmatization of food throughout the show’s first three seasons. “It’s important to consider cultural messaging about health, body image and beauty embedded within entertainment targeting young girls,” Kolbeins notes. And when millions of teenage girls tune in each week to watch their four favorite liars continually push away their plates and shame each other’s eating habits, the message being sent needs to be taken into consideration.

Teenage girls have enough to worry about without a weekly reminder from ABC Family to mind their pretty little waistlines.

What do you think about Pretty Little Liar’s stigmatization of food? Let us know below!
