Female Celebrity Role Models For College Women

Sex tapes and clubbing and nude photos, oh my! Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan, it seems that more celebrities today are known for their wild personal lives rather than their actual accomplishments. Are there any classy ones left? Personally, I adore Natalie Portman, Amy Adams and Tina Fey. Here are a few more singers, actresses and writers that we deserve looking up to.

The Singer: Taylor Swift

This country crooner certainly had a big 2009. She filmed a part for the upcoming movie Valentine’s Day, collected dozens of awards including Album of the Year at the CMAs, and finished the year off with eight Grammy nominations. She just turned 20-years-old and as a gift, the advocate of education donated $250,000 to schools around the county. Plus, if you caught her on SNL, she is hilarious! “I admire Taylor Swift. She has a lot of talent but handles her fame with grace. She’s so young, but you can tell she has a good head on her shoulders. Unlike other stars her age, you know that she’ll stay at the top of the charts and have a lot of staying power.” – Elizabeth Lamb, University of North Carolina student

The Gossip Girl: Leighton Meester

The Gossip Girl star might play a mean Queen Bee on TV, but in real life, she comes off like she’s the stylish girl next door. Thankfully, Meester ditches Blair’s notoriously oversized headbands in favor of sweet and sexy dresses. Meester had us singing along with our favorite song, “Good Girls Go Bad”, and will release an album in January. “I love her sense of style, and I love that she’s down to earth and she hasn’t let stardom get to her.” – Sophie Jasinski, Her Campus Contributing Writer

The Screenwriter: Diablo Cody

This former stripper turned to writing and went on to pen the Oscar-nominated film Juno, making her mark with oh-so-memorable slang and witty dialogue (who doesn’t love the line “Your eggo is preggo, no doubt about it”?) Her recent projects, Jennifer’s Body starring Megan Fox, and the Showtime show United States of Tara starring Toni Collette, also have her unique touch. “I also adore Diablo Cody because she writes interesting things and seems to have a sense of humor and self-awareness, but doesn’t take any of it too seriously. Plus she’s writing the Sweet Valley High Movie, and how can you dislike anyone who is bringing that fabulousness to the big screen?” – Vanessa Friedman, Her Campus Contributing Writer

The Actresses: Julia Roberts

This Pretty Woman star and mom of three has been a box office beauty for years and somehow manages to keep her life out of the limelight. Roberts has made us laugh and cry in chick flicks like Runaway Bride and also earned an Oscar for her performance in Erin Brockovich. We can’t wait for Eat, Pray, Love and Valentine’s Day to come out! “She has great movies, is beautiful and classy, and has never been involved in any Hollywood scandals that I can think of.” – Cece Wildeman, Her Campus Contributing Writer

Anne Hathaway

From Disney princess to Jane Austen to Vogue assistant, Hathaway has played some killer characters. Unlike some of her peers, she keeps it classy and is well-spoken. Next up for Hathaway is Alice in Wonderland and Valentine’s Day. “Anne Hathaway is gorgeous, well-dressed and super sweet. I love how she can go from acting silly in Get Smart to serious in Brokeback Mountain.” – Jessica Stringer, Her Campus Contributing Writer

Jessica Stringer is a senior journalism major at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is originally from Woodbridge, VA. At UNC, she is the editorial director for Rival Magazine, a joint publication between UNC and Duke. She has previously written for the Daily Tar Heel, interned at DC Magazine and CNBC, and is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Jessica fell in love with London during her semester abroad and dreams of moving across the pond. Some of her favorite things include coconut cupcakes, Carolina basketball, old Hollywood movies, and her Havanese puppy Max.
