Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for Mike Flanagan’s 2026 adaptation of Carrie on Prime Video. If Mike Flanagan’s Carrie has taught us anything, it’s that not every friendship is what it seems. The new Prime Video series adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel follows protagonist Carrie White as she navigates high school bullying, discovers her telekinetic powers, and befriends a mysterious girl named Emaline, who might know more about her than she lets on. But Carrie isn’t the only character with secrets. Enter Amanda West, played by Katee Sackhoff, whose storyline introduces a much bigger world of supernatural abilities and raises a question fans can’t stop discussing: Is Emaline actually Amanda’s daughter?
Who Is Amanda in Carrie?
Amanda West is one of the show’s most intriguing additions to the Carrie series. Unlike Carrie’s mother, Margaret White, who fears her daughter’s powers for religious reasons, Amanda is connected to a broader effort to stop psychically gifted girls before their abilities become dangerous. Sackhoff, best known for her roles in Battlestar Galactica and The Mandalorian, brings an unsettling intensity to the character. Amanda’s storyline explores what happens when fear of supernatural abilities becomes so overwhelming that parents go to extreme lengths, including being willing to harm or kill their own children.Â
In an interview with the Television Academy, Flanagan explained that Amanda’s character came from the idea that other parents might share Margaret White’s fear of their daughters’ supernatural abilities. In a world with more girls like Carrie, he reasoned, some parents might even have tried to kill them.
Amanda’s storyline adds another layer to the show’s exploration of fear, control, and the consequences of being “different.” But does her past connect her to Emaline?
Who Is Emaline?
Played by Thalia Dudek, Emaline initially appears to be the friend Carrie desperately needs. While Carrie struggles with bullying and isolation, Emaline seems to understand her in ways that nobody else does.
There’s a catch, though: Emaline isn’t physically present. She uses astral projection to enter Carrie’s mind and communicate with her from a distance. As Flanagan explained in his Television Academy interview, Emaline was sent to observe Carrie after her powers attracted the attention of Adelaide, played by Kate Siegel. Adelaide is the head of a secret coven of gifted women who have telekinetic abilities similar to Carrie’s. Flanagan loved the idea of sending a psychic spy who could appear to be a friend while secretly carrying out a mission.
That revelation changes how we see their relationship. Emaline may genuinely care about Carrie, but she also entered her life with an agenda. By the finale, Emaline helps Carrie act out the prom massacre, and the two leave town together. It’s a dramatic change from the original novel, and it leaves their future wide open.
Is Emaline Amanda’s Daughter?
This is where things get interesting. Although viewers may be tempted to connect Amanda and Emaline through their storylines, Flanagan has not explicitly confirmed or denied publicly that Emaline is Amanda’s daughter.
What he has confirmed is that Amanda’s backstory involves her as a parent who fears her psychically gifted child. Emaline was created as a spy sent to monitor Carrie. Those details establish two separate sides of the show’s supernatural conflict, but they don’t prove a mother-daughter relationship. In other words, it’s a definite possibility, but not yet a confirmed fact in the series.
What Do Fans Think, & What Has Mike Flanagan Said?
Fans have been busy dissecting the finale and looking for clues about how the characters connect. The show encourages that kind of speculation by introducing audiences to a larger, supernatural world within the Carrie universe. Â
In Episode 7 of the series, fans get a flashback to Amanda discovering that her young daughter can astrally project, meaning she can project her consciousness outside her physical body. Sound familiar? That’s the exact ability Emaline uses throughout the series to communicate with Carrie without physically being there. The resemblance between the young girl in Amanda’s flashback and Emaline — and them having the same abilities — has led fans to believe that was Emaline’s childhood that we were seeing, and that Amanda is actually her mother. Honestly, the matching powers make this theory even more convincing than the shared last name alone.
In a separate interview with The Playlist, Flanagan discussed how he wanted Carrie to discover that she belongs to something much bigger than herself. He also explained that Emaline’s role as a spy was intentional from the beginning. That leaves plenty of room for theories about Amanda’s past, Emaline’s loyalties, and what might happen next.
Personally, I think this is one of the many compelling possible truths in this show: whether Amanda is Emaline’s mother. For now, the mother-daughter theory remains unconfirmed. But with so many secrets and surprises still surrounding these characters, I wouldn’t rule out another reveal just yet.
