This Viral ‘Dreamgirls’ Trend Has TikTok In A Chokehold

If you spent time scrolling your TikTok FYP over the 2023 holiday break, you likely saw videos of Dreamgirls fans recreating an iconic scene from the 2006 musical film. The clip that has everyone in a chokehold is the performance of “Dreamgirls” by The Dreams (inspired by Diana Ross and the Supremes).

In the now viral scene, Lorell, played by Anika Noni Rose, smiles and poses exaggeratedly beside Effie White (played by Jennifer Hudson) as they sing backup for Deena Jones (played by Beyoncé). Unintentionally stealing the attention of fans, Rose’s character birthed the viral Dreamgirls TikTok trend almost 20 years later.

In the trend, fans sing along to “Dreamgirls” and smile awkwardly as the camera pans across their faces as the lyrics “And all you got to do is dream. All you’ve got to do is dream” play along.

This trend has been done by hundreds of TikTok users — even a few celebrities have gotten in on the fun.

Anika Noni Rose hopped on the trend and recreated her now iconic face and pose in all the most unlikely places and situations, like waking up in the morning, after the shower, and after making her husband dinner. On Instagram, Rose acknowledged the trend by captioning a video, “Eye see ya’ll” and closed with “Happy New Year! Love you (emoji tryna take credit for my eyebrow).”

She knows how not to take herself too seriously, so I think it’s safe to say she wins.

Another celebrity who completely ate the face-off up is Michaela Jaé, most known for her role as Blanca Rodriguez on Pose. Fans rushed to the comments of her video to praise and laugh along with the actress.

One thing about TikTok is that it knows how to bring us all together, especially in some of the most unserious moments.

This might be one of the funniest trends to hit the app thus far, so I’ve gathered a few of the funniest recreations for your viewing pleasure. You’re welcome.

PUH-LEASE the wig!

It’s the steady panning of the camera for me.

Crying.

The spatula as the mic!

If you ask me, there’s no better way to start the New Year than with the Dreamgirls trend. It doesn’t look like the challenge is going anywhere anytime soon either, so don’t be shy, Besties. Join in on the fun.
