Drake University Student Dies Celebrating Her 21st Birthday

A Drake University student celebrating her 21st birthday died on Saturday afternoon after consuming alcohol in excess. The student, Lydia Clark, was a junior majoring in international relations and rhetoric.

The Des Moines Register reports that Clark had taken about 16 shots of alcohol Friday night. A police report links alcohol consumption to her cause of death.

The student’s father, Brad Clark, said that an undiagnosed heart condition may have also contributed to her death, but did not deny that his daughter had had too much to drink on the night before her death.

The Iowa State Daily published an editorial shortly after her death, warning of the dangers of binge drinking.
