The Truth About Dae & Kitty’s Fate In ‘XO, Kitty’ Season 1

XO, Kitty has captured the hearts of To All the Boys I Loved Before fans now that the season is officially available on Netflix in all its glory.  In the series, Lara Jean’s younger sister Kitty travels to South Korea to attend the elite high school school, KISS, in order to learn more about her mother, her Korean heritage, and to be with her long-distance boyfriend, Dae.

If you remember from the third TATBILB installment, To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Kitty met Dae when she asked him to take a picture of her and her family at the famed Korean tourist site, the Love Lock Bridge. It was love at first sight for the two, and now that Kitty can be with him in person, fans (especially me) are wondering if Dae and Kitty end up together by the end of XO, Kitty‘s first season. Spoiler warning: Spoilers for XO, Kitty Season 1 follow.

Well, I’m sorry to break the news to you that the two’s relationship ended when the first season’s final episode rolled around. But how did we end up here?

From the get-go, Kitty and Dae’s relationship was anything but ordinary as soon as Kitty stepped onto KISS’s campus. In the first episode, Kitty had to awkwardly learn that Dae was in a relationship with Yuri in the middle of the school’s welcoming celebration. Dae had agreed to enter into a contractual relationship with Yuri in order to keep her parents from discovering the truth about her romance with Juliana — but, of course, Kitty is unaware of all of this at the time.

We saw Kitty and Dae become friends as the episode went on, but Kitty never fully let go of her affection for Dae. At the same time, Dae desperately sought to explain his feelings in return, but was often interrupted by Yuri and her family problems. By Episode 7, Yuri formally ended things with Dae after learning of her mother’s attempts to send Juliana away upon discovering their secret relationship. This means Dae and Kitty were free to date again.

Between Episodes 8 and 9, the two went on several dates, and we get to see the love birds be totally cute together. Dae even surprises Kitty with a date during their school camping trip in Episode 8 and confesses he loves her.

By Episode 10, however, the two’s relationship has become increasingly strained as Kitty begins to develop affection for someone else: Yuri. Kitty has been concealing her newfound love for Yuri since Episode 6 as she tries to make things work with Dae; nevertheless, she can’t bear her emotions any longer and chooses to tell Dae the truth.

In the finale, Kitty gets expelled after getting caught living in the boy’s dorm room and is sent home. Dae decides to make one final attempt to repair their relationship before Kitty leaves back to the U.S., but she rejects him before he can get the chance. Kitty tells Dae once she sees him that she never regretted their connection, and that he was the perfect first boyfriend. Dae realizes that Kitty has seemingly closed the chapter between the two and that it’s probably time for him to move on as well. While Dae and Kitty did not have the happy ending we hoped for, I am excited to see where love will find them if a Season 2 of XO, Kitty is made!
