Spoiler alert: Spoilers for A Different World Season 1 follow. Netflix’s A Different World sequel series hit the platform on Sept. 24, and it did not waste any time introducing a whole new generation of Hillman students to viewers. While some of them were familiar faces, most of them are brand new. Dwayne and Whitley are back, now navigating Hillman from behind the scenes as interim president and alumna wife, respectively, while their daughter and her circle of friends take over the dorm room drama duties. Over the course of the season, viewers watched new love triangles form, watched Hillman itself nearly collapse thanks funding cuts and a full-blown staff and student protest, and watched at least one storyline spiral into full legal jeopardy. It’s everything you’d want from A Different World revival: messy, political, a little unhinged, and clearly setting up way more than it resolves.Â
Here’s the thing: the first season ended, and somehow, there are more questions than there are answers. We’re talking cliffhangers stacked on cliffhangers — the kind that leave you refreshing Reddit threads at 1 a.m. hoping someone else has the answers you don’t. So before we all spiral into a full Season 2 renewal countdown, let’s talk through the three biggest questions Season 1 left dangling, and what we think might actually happen next.Â
- Will Amir Go To Jail?
-
Netflix Amir’s whole Hillman experience started on thin ice. His admission was deferred a year after he spent time in juvenile detention, and once he finally enrolled, he got saddled with a new parole officer who treated “strict” like a personality trait. All season, that tension simmered in the background with room checks, check-ins, the general vibe of someone waiting to be caught doing literally anything. It finally boils over in the finale: During the gala, his PO tracks him down to inform him he missed a mandatory check-in — during the protest, no less — and reveals he’s already reported the violation. The episode ends with a warrant out for Amir’s arrest.
This isn’t a cliffhanger so much as a countdown clock someone forgot to hide. A warrant is about as unstable as television gets, as Amir’s legal troubles are clearly not behind him. The real question for Season 2 isn’t whether this comes back, it’s about whether he’ll be spending the season in jail for missing a check-in to literally protest on behalf of the school that’s supposed to be giving him a second chance. Unfortunately, this will be one question we’ll probably have to wait for Season 2 to clear up.
- Who Is “Bunny” That Hazel Is Texting?
-
Netflix Buckle up, because Hazel’s storyline turned into a full soap opera, and there was nobody to warn me. For most of the season, she’s in a relationship that becomes a major plot point when he steps out on her — with Amir, her best friend of all people — so that’s already messy. But, during the season, Hazel had also casually mentioned to the girls that she had a “boyfriend” back home, possibly tied to her church. It’s someone she technically never broke up with that she was sitting on the whole season. Then, in the finale, a completely different guy starts pursuing her, and when he says he can respect that she’s taken, she responds with a flirty “Can you?” Ma’am. Ma’am. That is not the response of someone who is, in fact, taken. Later, she gets a text from Bunny revealing they’ve been accepted into Hillman too and can’t wait to see her every day. This makes it seem like the hometown boyfriend she’s been quietly keeping on the back burner is about to become a permanent, on-campus problem.Â
Bunny is almost certainly this hometown boyfriend (though Bunny could be someone different — you never know), which honestly makes the whole thing messier. By the time the credits roll, Hazel’s Hillman relationship is over, her hometown boyfriend is about to transfer in expecting to pick things up in person, and she was just adding a new guy to the rotation. Nobody in this situation is innocent, including Hazel herself. I would like a spinoff of just this triangle.
- Who Will The President Of Hillman Be?
-
Netflix Dwayne has been serving as interim president all season, and it has been, to put it mildly, a lot. Funding cuts, a protest — crisis after crisis, and the kind of chaos that would send most people running. At the gala, Byron drops a bomb by announcing that he has recommended his own candidate for the permanent presidency, a moment that visibly stuns and angers both Whitley and Dwayne, who clearly did not see this coming. The season ends with no official vote, but Whitley gets the last word, telling Dwayne, “You will be the next president, if I have anything to say about it.” Whitley Gilbert protecting her man’s legacy — some things never change.Â
It’s looking like a full presidency battle will take place in Season 2, with Dwayne versus whoever Byron is backing, and Whitley positioned as his loudest, fiercest advocate. Given Dwayne’s whole arc — from the corny math major with the flip-up glasses nobody took seriously to a president the board itself credits with handling crisis after crisis — the show seems to be building toward a win for him. It just looks like it won’t be handed to him quietly.
