Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic – 3D Style

Believe it or not, it has been 15 years since James Cameron’s Titanic hit theaters and became an instant classic. The romance, drama, tension, rich historical background, amazing acting, and flawless cinematography created a new standard for movies, pushing the limits of Hollywood beyond anyone’s expectations. Not to mention the fact that Titanic launched Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet into superstardom. Is it even possible to picture Hollywood without thinking of DiCaprio and Winslet?

Tomorrow’s 3D release of the 1997 epic is in honor of the centennial of the infamous sinking, which took place on April 15, 1912. The hype has been building up for the last year as footage from the film graced TVs and movie theater screens throughout the country. A simple two-minute clip strategically placed before The Hunger Games caused thousands of collegiettes to burst into tears, remembering the emotional and heart wrenching film from the years of their childhood.

Despite the tears that will no doubt accompany the 3D release, this is a cinematic event that can’t be missed. All of the film’s stars are beyond excited for the release. Kate Winslet even took some time out of her busy schedule to reminisce about getting the role of Rose as well as being part of the epic, cinematic masterpiece.

Winslet is no longer ashamed to admit that she sent James Cameron a bouquet of roses with a note signed “From Your Rose” just three days after her audition in Los Angeles. She told USA Today, “Jim took a risk in casting me. A lot of my contemporaries – Uma Thurman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Winona Ryder – were much more likely candidates. I got lucky.”

Titanic completely changed Winslet’s life and will forever remain very close to her heart. At the London premiere she told BBC that the film had “never left her.” She went on to explain, “People have been saying to me all day, ‘How does it feel to be revisiting it after all this time?’ But people ask me about Titanic all the time, so it isn’t like I’m revisiting it at all. It’s part of my DNA.”

And what about Winslet’s current relationship with DiCaprio? The two have stayed close, even though DiCaprio’s work on Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained kept him from attending the London premiere. Winslet reveals, “That is the only reason for him not being here – and not being here for me. We really do talk a lot on the phone about life, love and work. I can’t imagine not having that.” So while the onscreen romance may not carry over into their personal lives, Winslet and DiCaprio have an unbreakable friendship that has lasted 15 years, an extremely long time for Hollywood.

When you’re looking for something to do this weekend, consider heading to theaters to see Titanic. Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of 3D technology, the re-release is more than just a 3D spectacle. As James Cameron explains, “the big thrill of it isn’t just the 3D. It’s bringing it back to the big screen, where it has a lot more emotional impact.” So grab your friends (and some tissues!) and relive one of the most epic films of all time.
