The NFL have confirmed that Bruno Mars is to star as the half-time entertainment at next year’s Superbowl XLVIII game in February. Since many of us look forward to the half-time entertainment just as much as the game itself, we’re thrilled it’s someone we love as much as Bruno Mars! He appeared on Fox NFL Sunday for the announcement just before kickoff of the first week of Sunday games.
This is one of the biggest events in the music calendar, even though it’s technically a sports event! Last year, an incredible 110.5 million viewers tuned in to watch the Superbowl, according to the NFL press release.
The Super Bowl halftime performance has had a few controversial performances in its time! In 2004, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake created a lot of scandal as he tore part of Jackson’s outfit, revealing one of her breasts. Oops! The incident was blamed on a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ but it still sparked a debate about indecency in modern broadcasting. CBS was fined $550,000 by the Federeal Communications Commission but this was later overruled.
The list of former half-time performers is quite prestigious, and Mars joins the likes of Madonna, Michael Jackson, U2, and Bruce Springsteen! The singer seems to be very excited about the performance as he tweeted: “We’re Going to the the Super Bowl!!!!!!! #PepsiSBHalftime,”.
Mars is evidently joining a list of music greats when he performs next year, but he’s very accomplished now. He’s already been nominated for 14 Grammy’s and has sold over 115 million singles. The singer is currently midway through his “Moonshine Jungle” tour — which continues on until March 16th 2014. He also won best male video and best choreography at last month’s VMAs, for his single “Treasure”.
Last year’s performance was by the amazing Beyonce, who was joined by her former Destiny’s Child co-stars Kelly Rowland and and Michelle Williams. They reunited for this performance to give fans renditions of Bootylicious, Independent Woman Part I and Single Ladies.
