In September 2023, Billie Eilish soft-launched her new back tattoo on Instagram with a photo that showed the ink at the nape of her neck, but fans had no idea the piece of art would reach the bottom of her spine. But on Oct. 19, Eilish posted her entire back tattoo, and fans were astonished by the size. The photo shows her bare back from the moment she got the new ink, tracing from the top of her neck to the bottom of her back. Just looking at it hurts! Eilish didn’t share what the tattoo means or resembles, but she did tag her tattoo artist Matias Milan in the image, whose signature seems to be dark, bold patterns.
This is quite the piece for Eilish to add to her ink collection. Eilish has three other tattoos, including a dragon on her waist, hip, and thigh; fairies on her hand inspired by her favorite childhood book; and Eilish written on her chest in a gothic font.
Four years ago, Eilish declared in a 2019 Calvin Klein campaign video that she “never wants the world to know everything about me.” Since then, she’s hard-launched every one of her tattoos. In 2021, Eilish was published on the cover of British Vogue, revealing her massive dragon tattoo on her upper thigh and waist, although she had gotten it six months prior. The singer-songwriter then showed off the dragon at the 2021 Met Gala, wearing an Oscar de la Renta gown with a sexy thigh slit.
In October 2021, Eilish revealed another tattoo via Instagram Story after a fan asked, “What is your favorite tattoo?” Eilish responded, “My most recent one, my sweet little guardian angel fairies, from my favorite childhood book,” she said. The inspiration for the fairies was the book Fairyopolis by Cicely Mary Barker.
Along with her Oct. 18 photo dump featuring her new tattoo, Eilish included photos of a BeReal taken in a Gucci store, a new red and black hairstyle, and the lyrics to a new Drake song featuring Lil Yachty with lyrics, “She had big t*ts like Billie Eilish, but she couldn’t sing (Drip).” Fans commented regarding the lyrics, “THE LYRIC??????” and “Ur so real for the 2nd slide.”
Until her yearly Vanity Fair video releases, fans are left to wonder what her back tattoo means.
