If you are rightfully sick of hearing the AI-generated version of the titular song off Ariana Grande’s upcoming album, Petal, that’s been all over your FYP, don’t worry. The pop diva surprised fans at her Montreal concert on July 28 by performing the song for the very first time — simultaneously putting the AI cover to rest and sending fans spiraling over the lyrics.
Grande’s eighth studio album, which releases on July 31, is all about growth during dark times. In a press release about the album, she said “petal is something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.”
The imagery of “growing through the cracks” isn’t just album promo — it’s embedded directly in the lyrics themselves. After Grande debuted the song in Montreal, clips of the performance quickly made their way to Instagram and TikTok. In classic Arianator fashion, fans started dissecting every line in the comments.
Although the lyrics are a little tricky to hear at first (you know an Ari song is going to be good when she stops enunciating), many fans theorize that the pre-chorus goes: “It’s such a f*cked situation / Petal in the pavement / Just as long as she keeps getting it right / Heartbreak won’t bite / This is paradise.”
Grande essentially confirmed some of these lyrics with the caption of her most recent Instagram post: “just as long as she keeps getting it right / heartbreak won’t bite / this is paradise.”
But it isn’t just the lyrics that are catching fans’ attention. The song definitely sounds darker than what fans have been used to on eternal sunshine. In fact, Grande even included a rap section, and is singing with a fully confident chest voice, which many fans are comparing to the Dangerous Woman and Thank U, Next eras. One user said, “This reminded me of 7 rings the baby yuh and then a rap??? HELLOOOO.” Another said, “Oh she’s maddddddddd! This album is going to be one of her best.”
Fans are especially losing it over the lyrics of the rap verse, particularly the lines, “But I’m not a victim, b*tch / I’m practically drowning in blessings / It’s bye this time for real.” One commenter wrote, “‘B*tch I’m drowning in my blessings’ oh we’re getting another manifesting song iktr.” Another said, “What she mean ‘it’s bye for real this time’ this better not be her last album ill cry.”
Speaking of manifesting, let’s manifest that this is definitely not Grande’s last album. Because if petal is any indication of what the rest of the songs are going to sound like, then the pop star is about to drop one of her strongest albums yet.
