With a music career that has spanned decades and even earned three Grammys, Miley Cyrus has a lot that she can teach younger artists. But her new song “Innocent Ways” appears to be dedicated to one artist in particular: her younger sister, Noah Cyrus. Released on Sept. 18 from her newest album Bass Persuades, “Innocent Ways” channels Miley’s concern over her sister’s well-being and her feelings of being unable to help her. For anyone who has a younger sister, the “Innocent Ways” lyrics might hit hard.
As of Sept. 18, Miley hasn’t outright said her song is about Noah, nor has Noah spoken publicly about the song, but fans are drawing the connections. During her Sept. 17 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Miley mentions that “Innocent Ways” can apply to younger generations and mirrors her own experiences with feeling unequipped to handle the spotlight as a young star. “You can’t tell a young person that when you’re older, ‘you’re gonna understand something that you don’t understand now,’” she said in the interview. Considering Noah is Miley’s only younger sister, the parallels are pretty apparent.
“Innocent Ways” is accompanied by powerful synths and explosive basslines that powerfully depict Miley’s own angst in feeling disconnected. The song starts with the lines, “Sisters / I want better for my sister / she calls me only when it’s late night, and she’s high.” It sounds like Miley yearns for a deeper connection with her sister, and expresses concern for her.
In the chorus, Miley simultaneously laments about her own guilt in unsuccessfully helping her sister and the detrimental societal expectations placed on young people, especially women. At the beginning of the chorus, Miley sings, “I tried to save all of her innocent ways.” It sounds like Miley believes that Noah’s innocence has been robbed by a society that pressures young women to grow up as fast as possible. This echoes a 2017 episode of Elvis Duran’s podcast Label Defiers, when Miley mentioned that she hopes Noah will never feel pressured by stardom. “I really hope that she never feels those pressures and I hope other people respect her and don’t actually make her something she’s not,” she said in the interview.
“Innocent Ways” also hints that Miley may feel Noah’s detached demeanor doesn’t reflect her true self: “Oh, her face is made of stone till you get her alone / heart is made of chrome ‘til you get her alone / girl puts on a show, only knows what she shows ya.” It sounds like she’s imploring listeners to see Noah for her kind, loving personality. Throughout the song, Miley makes sure to give Noah grace, too. She even sings, “grace comes with age, but don’t tell her.” Essentially, Miley may be saying Noah shouldn’t expect to have everything figured out at such a young age.
Noah herself has enjoyed a successful music career. She broke into the music industry in 2016 with her debut single “Make Me (Cry),” released multiple EPs, and even secured a Grammy nomination at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Along the way, Miley and Noah have both spoken positively about each other’s careers and even appeared together in the March 2026 Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special. Despite their support for each other, Noah has expressed the difficulties that came with being Miley’s younger sister. In a 2020 Instagram Live, Noah said that it was “really tough” to grow up under Miley’s shadow.
