Alicia Silverstone Brought Back Some *Iconic* Cher Looks From ‘Clueless’

Who better to give you styling advice than the *iconic* Cher Horowitz? Almost three decades after 1995’s Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone, the actress returned to her role as Cher for a 2023 Super Bowl ad with Rakuten alongside costar Elissa Donovan, who played Amber in the beloved rom-com.  The pair recreated the school debate scene featuring the Cher outfit. Yes, I’m talking about the yellow plaid set.

Although I’m sad there’s no official Clueless reboot on the horizon(a girl can dream, right?), I loved seeing Silverstone as the fashionista she truly is. In the ad, Silverstone rocks the modern versions of some of her character’s viral looks. Fans get the first taste of this nostalgic trip through ‘90s fashion when Cher walks into a busy high school classroom in the yellow blazer and skirt set. “I used to be pretty clueless about shopping,” she says. “But when I heard I could save by getting cash back with Rakuten, I was like, as if!”

The updated looks shown in the commercial are all thanks to the brilliant mind of fashion designer (and Silverstone’s good friend) Christian Siriano, who wrote in an Instagram post about the ad, “Um, hello, dream project.” The award-winning designer curated four looks total for the ad, all of which will be featured in his New York Fashion Week show as part of his ready-to-wear collection.

Perhaps the most iconic, the yellow plaid ensemble features a yellow and black plaid blazer with red detailing and a matching skirt. The other looks in the ad include Cher’s black and white miniskirt and black blazer, a cherry-red sweater vest ensemble, and a casual denim look.

The ad will air during Super Bowl LVII on Jan. 12. In the meantime, check out Rakuten and Siriano’s Not-So-Clueless edit, a list of shoppable picks from the designer made up of Clueless-inspired looks.
