5 Reasons Why ‘Never Have I Ever’ Should Be On Your Watchlist

Need something fresh to watch while social distancing? Look no further! Mindy Kaling’s new teen comedy, Never Have I Ever, has officially landed on Netflix. Scoring a cool 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, this hilarious yet heart-warming series follows Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her two best friends, STEM powerhouse Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) and aspiring thespian Eleanor (Ramona Young), as they navigate high-school feuds, crushes and family drama in a wildly entertaining quest for popularity.

Intrigued? Here are five reasons why this comedy should be on your watchlist:

The pop-culture references

TikTok, Netflix, and Instagram, oh my! As seen from that iconic TikTok above, this series is packed with plenty of tongue-in-cheek references to your favourite apps, celebrities and shows, which makes this series just that much more relatable. A character comes to a sudden romantic epiphany while watching Riverdale at one point. It’s kind of amazing. (We see you, Netflix. We see you.)

The A+ cast

Take notes, Hollywood – this is how you cast a show. Not only is this cast wonderfully diverse, but they’re also all incredibly endearing and fun to watch. Be fully prepared for newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan to knock your socks off with her comedic timing. She plays her character, Devi, in a certain wise-cracking, emotional and refreshingly authentic way that’s pretty rare to come by in coming-of-age stories. We LOVE to see it.

Andy Samberg guest-stars

Yes, you read that right – Brooklyn’s finest detective Jake Peralta is on the scene. The internet’s favourite comedian swings by to narrate a special episode of this fresh teen comedy as himself, and you won’t want to miss it. Although there aren’t any Halloween heists, I can promise you that there is absolutely still hilarity.

The iconic outfits

Major heart eyes! This show is jam-packed full of memorable ‘fits that pop on the screen. I’ll take one of each to dance around my living room in, please.

And, finally, Paxton Hall-Yoshida

No words needed.
