What do you want to do before you die?

Sure it’s a simple enough question… but if you really stop to think about it, you might even surprise yourself with the answers you come up with.

Last night I had the privilege of attending an event on my campus hosted by the cast of MTV’s The Buried Life. Aside from being beyond gorgeous (and super funny!), I was completely taken aback by how inspirational these four guys and their mission really are.

While most people assume that The Buried Life is just another scripted reality show on MTV, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The guys’ mission to cross items off their bucket list and to help others do the same along the way has been going strong for five years now! MTV doesn’t help any of the guys with the items on their list, and it’s all up to them to accomplish their 100 goals before they die.

Which got me thinking…what do I really want to do before I die? I mean, obviously, here I am at college getting an education with the expectation that I will someday have a good job, and with any luck, a family and the quintessential house in the suburbs to go with it. And yet, that’s such a canned dream. If I could do absolutely anything in the entire world within my lifetime, what would it be?

Right after The Buried Life guys finished their talk, my best friend and I raced back to our dorm to immediately get to work on our bucket lists. Without the pressure of writing goals that we thought out parents, professors, and even friends would approve of and support, we ended up with two pretty awesome lists.

The 100 things that I hope to accomplish range from the socially aware  (#43: Give blood) to frivolous (#7: Own a Chanel purse) and possible (#36: Graduate from college) to the next to impossible (#22: Meet Lauren Conrad). Among many others,  I shamelessly stole two of my goals from the movie A Walk to Remember (one of my all time favorites), namely #14: Be in two places at once, and #15: Witness a miracle.

What I took away from these four amazing guys was simple: you can accomplish your dreams, no matter how simple or complex they are. They are living proof that anything is possible if you stay committed and determined to achieve it. You don’t have to have grandiose notions of world peace or a cure for a disease. They can be simple things like going on a shopping spree or learning how to surf. The important thing is that you realize your dreams, not the ones assigned to you by anyone else. Now I leave it to you…
