What’s the longest layover you’ve ever suffered through? I think my record is 7 hours (if you don’t count those lovely times when your flight gets canceled!). Air travel is always tricky around the holidays and I’ve had a particularly interesting time trying to get home this Thanksgiving.
The drama started last Monday. On my way home to NC from Boston, my first flight was perfect. After sitting through a 3+ hour layover in Atlanta, I was finally on the plane to Asheville, ready for the short 45 minute flight home. The plane door closed and we pulled away from the gate. Soon after, the pilot came on the intercom and announced that our flight had been canceled due to “heavy fog” in Asheville and that we would be re-booked on a flight the next morning. Luckily, I was traveling home with my boyfriend Alex who happens to live in Atlanta. As such, we were saved from having to sleep in the airport and were able to crash at his house. Weighing our options the next morning, we decided to skip the airport and drive up to Asheville.
Right now, I’m in the the Atlanta airport once again, sitting through a 4 hour layover waiting to go back up to school. I was thrilled to discover that terminal E has free wi-fi! (If you’re ever in the ATL, be sure to crash in E – grab some coffee and use the wireless “Free Air – Concourse E”). Actually, layovers aren’t that bad – especially when there’s free wi-fi. I just pretend that I’m in a coffee shop back at school and try really hard to focus on my schoolwork. It’s sort of like a coffee shop… except for the janitor who keeps walking around rapping…
