Intern Diaries: Keeping in Touch

It’s been an amazing summer and I’m sad to say that I finish my internship next week. Next friday I say goodbye to all of the fact-checking, brainstorming and researching until the school year starts. I thought this week I should mention the
most important part of any internship, editorial or otherwise: saying goodbye and keeping in touch.I’ve already written about how to get a great recommendation, now I’m going to share my top three tips on the best way to keep in touch once you head back to campus.

1) Ask first! Always make sure that the people you’re working with are alright withyou checking in every now and again. I’ve never met an editor or an intern who thought touching base du
ring the school year was a bad idea but in the professional world, you have to respect everyone’s boundaries.

2) Find out what type of communication your bosses would be most comfortable with. For some people its  Linkedin, for some it’s email or actual mail, and astonishingly, for some it’s Facebook (I had an editor tell me to add her when I left)! Never be too pushy and stick the method of communication that your bosses prefer.

3) Stay Interesting! You landed your internship because of your great personalityso make sure that it always shines through! When you email, message or write to people you’ve worked with the goal is to remind them of how wonderful you (still) are so that when graduation times rolls around
they’re still wowed by you. Send clips from your blog or school projects that pertain to your internship. Make sure they know you’re still (months later!) thinking about the company so the company keeps thinking about you.

Have any ideas for a final few Intern Diaries posts you’d love to read? Shoot me an email at amberrambharose@hercampus.com and share your suggestions, or follow me on twitter @amberdeexterous. I’d love to hear from you!
