Last night, I went to my first Harvard basketball game. I’m pretty sure that makes me a terrible sports fan (I am a senior after all – I’ve had 4 years to support my school’s basketball team). The ironic thing is, the first Harvard basketball game I went to was an away game – in North Carolina! This deserves a little bit of an explanation.
I got my wisdom teeth out last week (read about it here). As a result, I decided that it was best practice to go home for spring break and relax. In addition, I see my opportunities to spend time with my family and friends at home dwindling and I want to take advantage of every chance I have.
My sister Kelsey is a sophomore at Appalachain State University, located in Boone, NC – about 2 hours from my hometown of Asheville, NC. She e-mailed me a few days ago with an announcement that App State was playing Harvard in basketball. I couldn’t believe it. Her school (NCAA Division 1-AA) was playing my school (Ivy League…) in basketball! My dad and I decided that we HAD to go watch. Never again (probably) would Kelsey’s school play my school in ANY sport – especially while we are both still enrolled at our respective schools.
This was the first postseason game that Harvard has played since the 1946 NCAA tournament! Although Harvard was in the lead for much of the first half, we wound up losing to App 93-71. I wasn’t too much of a sore loser and Kelsey didn’t gloat too much. Overall, it was a really fun chance for the two of us to “compete” with one another in a completely new way.
Go Crimson!
