A lot of us are finally in the home stretch of the semester. But we’re not off the hook just yet! From formals to finals, there’s so much to do in so little time, and with this much stress, we need a spa day. Of course, if you’re currently living on a collegiette budget, you don’t exactly have the money to shell out for expensive spa treatments every few weeks. But you do have a fridge full of products to help you create your very own at-home beauty products! Try these simple do-it-yourself beauty treatments to make yourself feel glamorous without emptying your wallet.
1. Brown Sugar Body Scrub
The key to softer skin is occasional exfoliation. Exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cells and creates a smoother complexion while also minimizing pores and wrinkles. The smaller your pores, the more your skin appears to glow. Sugar scrubs are usually easy to make, and you can even mix the ingredients with your hands. Try this simple one from The Idea Room:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup olive oil
- 2 tablespoons honey
After mixing the ingredients together, take a handful of the scrub and apply it all over your body, including your feet, back, face, etc. Then, get in the shower and rinse it off. Your skin should feel like new!
2. Coconut Oil Hair Treatment
Before you head to the beach this summer, remember that it’s important to keep your hair healthy and moisturized. Too much exposure to sun and sand can dry out your hair, so make sure you’re taking care of your hair! Beauty guru Michelle Phan says that coconut oil is the perfect moisturizer for dry hair. According to Phan, the coconut oil moisturizes your hair while also adding a healthy shine. Try out her coconut oil hair mask:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 1/3 cup olive oil
After mixing the oils, apply the mixture to your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave the mixture in for 15-20 minutes. Rinse it out and shampoo and condition as you normally would.
3. Lemon Juice Facial
Lemons aren’t much fun to eat on their own, but they hold a pretty significant amount of vitamins and minerals (like vitamin C, magnesium and potassium) that can help your hair and skin. Fresh lemon juice helps to exfoliate your skin while also getting rid of skin discoloration. Try this facial from Woman’s Day.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and apply to your face. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes and rinse your face with water. The mixture should make your skin feel tighter. Repeat this facial up to two to three times a week or whenever it’s needed.
4. Olive Oil Facial Treatment
Olive oil is a great moisturizer for most skin types. Try applying a small amount of oil to any area of dry skin at night before you go to sleep. You should wake up with softer skin in the morning.
5. Chocolate Facial
This is the perfect healthy way to satisfy your chocolate cravings! This chocolate facial mask helps to tighten your skin and reduce the size of pores. The cocoa powder is packed with antioxidants, while the honey and natural yogurt can treat acne and cause your skin to glow. Try this facial from Bubzbeauty:
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon natural yogurt
After mixing the ingredients, apply a generous amount of the mixture to your face with a makeup brush, avoiding your eyes, and let it sit for 20-25 minutes. Then, rinse the mixture off with water and moisturize your skin.
The end of the school year can get a little crazy, but it’s important for us to take good care of ourselves while also finding a way to combat the stress of the weeks ahead. Finding a way to look glamorous on a budget is hard, but the ingredients in your pantry can help make it possible. Stay beautiful, collegiettes!
