Rachel Cortez is a Latinx Social Relations and Policy student at MSU with a concentration in Women's and Gender Studies. When not obsessing over recent Supreme Court decisions gone wrong, she is writing the next great paper challenging gender binaries. In the future she aspires to be involved in a non-profit combatting sexual violence against women, no matter where that takes her.
Intersectionality has somehow transformed into some game about how everyone has intersections and we need to include everybody within our social movements for equality, even if they have racist, homophobic, and/or sexist ways of knowing that endanger and hurt us and our communities. This imagining of intersectionality is the exact opposite of what Dr. Crenshaw explains in her work.
This framework of violent anti-LGBTQ and blatant transphobic action against LGBTQ Latinx victims can help us understand the journey to the United States that for many LGBTQ Latinx is deemed necessary for survival. Perhaps the group with the least media coverage, trans Latinx, endure some of the harshest conditions within U.S. detention centers.
Perhaps a less discussed topic is how “the Cheetah Girls” movie came from a 16-novel series by author Deborah Gregory. In the novels, the Cheetah Girls are made up of five black girls.
