Mya James

Bowie State '29

I am a sophomore psychology major at Bowie State University. I am originally from Oklahoma, but I moved to Maryland to continue my education and experience life at an HBCU. My interest in psychology comes from my desire to better understand people, emotions, and the different experiences that shape a person’s mental health. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in mental health counseling and build a career helping children and young adults.

In addition to my education, I have gained professional experience in customer service and health and wellness. I have also completed Crisis Text Line training, which strengthened my communication skills and expanded my understanding of how to support people during difficult moments. I value giving back to others and have participated in community service through my church, including events that provide food and assistance to people experiencing homelessness. These experiences have helped me become more compassionate, patient, and committed to making a positive difference in my community.

As a member of the Her Campus at Bowie State editorial team, I enjoy writing honest and relatable articles about college life, mental health, personal growth, beauty, relationships, and self-care. I hope my writing encourages other young women to feel understood and reminds them that they are not alone in what they experience. Outside of school and writing, I enjoy listening to music, exploring beauty and skincare, working out, journaling, spending time with friends and family, and discovering simple ways to romanticize everyday life. I believe that even during stressful seasons, small moments of joy can make life feel more meaningful.
