Mary Salins

Illinois State '27

My name is Mary Salins, and I am a senior at Illinois State University majoring in Geography. Throughout my time at Illinois State, I have developed a strong interest in understanding the world around me and how people, places, and environments are connected. My education has given me opportunities to explore different areas of geography while also developing skills in research, communication, and critical thinking. As I prepare to graduate, I am excited to take the knowledge and experiences I have gained throughout college and apply them to my future career.
I grew up in a small town in northern Illinois with a population of about 450 people. Growing up in such a small community has had a meaningful influence on who I am today. Living in a close-knit town has taught me to appreciate community, relationships, and the people around me. It has also given me a unique perspective on the differences between rural communities and larger cities. My background and experiences have contributed to my interest in geography and my curiosity about the different places and communities that make up our world.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, hanging out with my cat, and reading. My family is very important to me, and I enjoy being able to spend time with them whenever I can. I also love spending time at home with my cat, who is a big part of my everyday life. Reading is another one of my favorite ways to relax and escape from the busy schedule of college. As I enter my final year at Illinois State University, I am looking forward to making the most of my senior year, continuing to grow both personally and professionally, and beginning the next chapter of my life after graduation.
