My name is Kate Powers, I’m a freshman at UMD and am currently Undeclared. I am strongly considering declaring Journalism as my major next semester and am looking to get involved in related clubs and organizations. I’m from Newburyport, Massachusetts. My personal interests include reading, writing, running, tennis, surfing, going to the beach, attending concerts, and spending time with my friends and family, especially my younger sister. I work at a boat club and a restaurant during the summer in my hometown, as well as babysit.
I graduated from Newburyport High School last June and was in the top 15% of my class. I achieved three academic key awards as well as the Pathway to Biliteracy Award for Intermediate Spanish. I was also a member of the National Honor Society both junior and senior year. I served on my school’s student council for four years, as class secretary for two and an executive board member for two.
I was team captain of my varsity cross country team and my JV volleyball team and worked as an editor for my school magazine, called The Record. I joined several clubs, ran track and field for three years, and participated in community service events, including three major recurring projects. Here at UMD I am a part of club tennis and am looking forward to joining more organizations, including Greek life in the spring.
