Gianna Ortega

Illinois '25

My name is Gianna, and I am currently a junior at the University of Illinois, where I am majoring in Psychology. I chose this field of study because I am deeply interested in understanding human behavior, thought processes, and the social and cultural factors that shape who we are. As I continue through my coursework, I am particularly drawn to classes that explore mental health, development, and the psychology of race and ethnicity. These areas allow me to connect academic knowledge to real-world issues, and they motivate me to consider how I might use my degree to support others in meaningful ways.

In addition to my academic studies, I am working on developing professional skills that will prepare me for life after graduation. Whether it is through group projects, campus activities, or community involvement, I enjoy finding opportunities to collaborate with others and grow as a leader. My long-term goals include pursuing a career in psychology where I can combine research with hands-on work, possibly in counseling, mental health services, or community outreach. I am motivated by the idea of making a positive impact in people’s lives, and I see my education as a strong foundation for that path.

Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, which helps me stay balanced and grounded. I also like to read, listen to music, and explore new places, whether it’s around campus or in nature. These hobbies give me a creative outlet and allow me to reflect on my experiences. I believe that personal growth comes from both learning in the classroom and embracing new experiences in everyday life, and I look forward to continuing to grow as both a student and an individual.
