I’m Aaliyah Velázquez Ramos, a sophomore at Jacksonville University studying communications and education, and I’ll graduate with the class of 2029. I’m originally from Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and I’m passionate about the way a good message can connect people and build community. My goal is to build a career in marketing and social media, and I’m excited to be the founding president of the Her Campus chapter at JU, where I get to lead a team of creative and driven women.
My communications classes have shown me how much strategy goes into every post, caption, and campaign. On campus, I put that into practice as a member of JU Dolphin Media, where I create content and tell stories about our university community. I also serve as a commuter senator in the Student Government Association, representing students who travel to campus each day and making sure their voices are heard. Outside of class, I work in an after school program and have taught Sunday school, which taught me how to explain ideas clearly and keep an audience engaged. Those are skills I use every time I plan content.
I’m happiest when I’m chasing a good story, whether that’s a moody scene lit just right, a rom com that makes me believe in happy endings, or a little slice of nostalgia that feels like it was made decades before I was born. I notice the small details most people miss, like a color palette, a camera angle, or a perfectly timed pause, and I love figuring out why they work. That eye for detail follows me into everything I create, and it’s why I’m drawn to marketing and social media, where every image and caption is a chance to make someone feel something. Writing for Her Campus is my chance to bring that creativity to our campus, and I hope my articles leave you feeling inspired, informed, and a little more connected to campus life.
